There is alway something going on at Kayhi.  But recently, the  flurry of activity has changed.  The gyms are full as coaches jockey for practice times.  Students spread out in the commons as they paint posters to hang in the Clarke Cochrane gymnasium.  Ms. Wadley, the district’s Activities Director, checks and rechecks her lists.  Households around Ketchikan prepare to house visiting teenagers for other towns.  All this because it is time for basketball.
This weekend, the Kayhi boys will host the Chugiak Mustangs and the Craig Panthers in games scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights.  Game times are:
4:00 pm • Ketchikan C vs. Craig JV
5:30 pm • Ketchikan JV vs. Craig Varsity
7:15 pm • Ketchikan Varsity vs. Chugiak Varsity

With four games left in the regular season, Kayhi’s boys basketball team is 13-5, sports an offense capable of erasing double-digit deficits in mere minutes, and is smack in the middle of a 12-day break.

Yes, it’s a good time to be a Kayhi King.

“Our kids are fresh, they’re excited about what’s going on and we have time to prepare for everybody we’re about to play,” Kayhi coach Eric Stockhausen said. “It’s really kind of a lot of fun to be around here right now.”

It’s easy to see why.

Kayhi has won seven of its last nine games – including two in a row -  since a loss to Thunder Mountain Jan. 8. During that stretch, the Kings beat two teams in the top five of the Alaska School Activities Association’s Winning Percentage Index – No. 2 North Pole and No. 5 Soldota – and lost to No. 4 Dimond.

The No. 6 Kings also picked up a 37-point win over Sitka, three consecutive Southeast Conference victories, a one-point loss to Palmer and a 103-96 win over Prince Rupert in Canada in its most recent game Jan. 30.

“Our kids are well-conditioned, they’re intelligent, and they’re starting to feel the ball rolling for success,” Stockhausen said. “It’s happening at the right time for us.”

The Kings’ hot streak comes along with their recent habit of digging huge first-half holes before relying on a suffocating defense and high-powered offense to bail them out down the stretch.

Kayhi trailed 40-20 during the first half against Prince Rupert, only to outscore the Rainmakers 65-47 in the second half. The Kings erased a 33-21 halftime deficit against Soldotna, and fell 14 points behind Southeast Conference rival Juneau-Douglas before rallying to beat the Crimson Bears 59-55 Jan. 16.
